Courage is not "not being scared"
The bravest moment in a children's story is not the hero who is never afraid; it is the one who is afraid and goes anyway. In one of ours a baby dinosaur keeps tumbling off the ledge until it takes one last leap with its eyes squeezed shut and feels the wind catch both wings. In another, a little one jumps first to show a scared friend how soft the landing is.
Bigger fears for older children
From six, the fears get bigger and the courage quieter. A path whose signposts all say TURN BACK, where the monsters turn out to be paint. Picking up a bow with trembling fingers and playing so softly the violin barely whispers. Children who are anxious themselves often love these most: the hero feels exactly what they feel.
The brave choice is theirs
At the scariest moment, our stories stop and your child decides: step onto the path or turn back? A child who chooses the brave option in a story, and sees it turn out well, has practised something real.
