Too old for a bedtime story?
Most nine- to eleven-year-olds read on their own, and many quietly miss being told a story. Listening is different from reading: a narrated story can carry a bigger cast, a longer plot and more voices than a book they would pick up alone, and it gives a busy evening the ritual back without anyone having to read aloud.
What they want at this age
Real stakes, not baby stories. Plans that go wrong, friends who disagree, a hero who is good at something and still has to work for the ending. Humour gets drier, loyalty matters more, and a little danger is welcome as long as the story resolves it. Ten to fifteen minutes is the right length; at bedtime, the calmer bedtime mode keeps the last minutes quiet.
