How long should a Christmas story be?
For children aged three to six, five minutes is enough: a short Christmas story is long enough to settle into and short enough to fall asleep after. From seven, ten or fifteen minutes works well. In December the ending matters more than usual. Excitement is already sky-high, so an evening story should wind down gently rather than stop at its most thrilling moment.
A story for every night of Advent
Plenty of families turn Christmas stories into a ritual: one every evening until Christmas, like an Advent calendar you listen to. Reindeer lost in the snow, a star that falls from the sky, a toy workshop where everything goes wrong the night before the big day. The wait feels shorter when every evening brings a small adventure.
Read aloud or listen?
Nothing replaces a story you read aloud yourself: the time together is what counts, not the text. But December evenings are rarely calm. On the nights when your voice is gone, or two children need to go to bed at once, a narrated story is not a substitute but a relief. Many families do both: read when you can, listen when you cannot.
