What changes between six and eight
Six is the year of starting school and the first words read alone, but listening still goes further than reading: a story told aloud can be longer and more tangled than anything a six-year-old would manage on the page. By seven, fairness becomes a big deal, jokes get better and friends fall out and make up. By eight, many children love a mystery with clues they can follow, and a hero who gets it wrong before getting it right. Ten minutes suits all three ages; for a car journey, fifteen.
Exciting, but still a bedtime story
These are the years of the first truly scary stories, and of the scares that keep them awake afterwards. Our stories for this age have tension, a dark cave or a strange letter at midnight, but the ending always resolves it, and the bedtime mode tells it with a calmer voice and slow, calm music. At night, an adventure works better than a ghost story.
Choices that cost something
Our stories stop at turning points and let your child decide, and at this age the choices can cost something: help the rival or win the race, own up or hide the mistake. It is a good excuse to ask afterwards what they would have done themselves.
