How children pick up a language from stories
Children learn a language best from things they want to understand. A story with a dragon in it is worth the effort; a vocabulary list is not. Listening with the pictures in front of them, they guess from context, and the text on screen lets an older child follow along word by word. Short and often beats long and rare: one five-minute story a day is plenty.
For bilingual families
If one parent speaks Spanish, stories are the easiest place to keep it alive: the child hears a rich, natural Spanish that everyday family talk rarely reaches. Play the same story more than once; children love repeats, and every listen they understand more.
