First communion gifts for a child who already has things

First communion usually comes at eight or nine — old enough that the traditional keepsake gets admired once and put in a drawer. Here is what tends to get used, what tends to get kept, and how to tell which one you are buying.

The short version

There are two honest kinds of communion gift: one to keep and one to use. Most people buy the first and most children want the second. If you are giving one gift, decide which you are giving on purpose rather than by accident.

Five that work

  • Something traditional, chosen properly

A cross, a rosary, a first Bible or a keepsake box. These are the expected gifts and there is nothing wrong with expected — but a child of eight notices whether it was picked for them or picked off a shelf. An engraved date does most of that work.

  • Something they can keep for the day

A photo frame, an album, a personalised candle. Communion is one of the few days a child will be asked about years later, and the gifts that survive are usually the ones that hold the day rather than mark it.

  • Money, honestly

At eight or nine, a first savings account or a sum towards something they are saving for is often the most used gift in the room. Unfashionable, and true.

  • An experience rather than an object

A day out, a class, a membership. Children this age already own things; what they remember is what they did. This is also the gift that does not need somewhere to live.

  • Something with their name in it

Personalisation lands differently at this age than at three. An eight-year-old understands that someone had to choose to put their name on it, which is most of the point of a gift.

If you are the godparent

Godparents get the licence to give the gift the parents would not — and the handicap of not knowing what is already in the house. When in doubt, ask. It is less awkward than the alternative, and at this age the duplicate gift is nearly always the expensive one.
